2 of the car manufacturers in Malaysia are Proton and Perodua.
Proton is headquatered in Shah Alam Selangor and has an additional manufacturing plant in Tanjung Malim, Perak. It was founded in 1983. It was largely a manufacturer of badge engineered vehicles from Mitsubishi between 1985 to early 2000s. It was owned by Khazanah Nasionak but taken over by DRB-HICOM with the transaction worth RM1.2 billion. Proton was founded by Tun Dr. Mahathir, the former PM of Malaysia. Proton approached Mitsubishi and brokered a joint venture for production of first Malaysian cars. The first production was Proton Saga.
Perodua is the second largest car manufacturer in the nation after Proton. It was established in 1992 and launched their first production, Perodua Kancil in 1994. Perodua mainly produces minicars and does not have models in same market segments as Proton. Perodua cars have used Daihatsu's component designs. Daihatsu holds 35% of stake in Perodua. Perodua has sold over 189000 vehicles in 2012 which is its highest sales record. It is planning to set up a second car manufacturing plant from RM 770 million investments in coming years.
